RFU Return to Play

Dear Members,

As we close in on three months of lockdown, it’s only natural that our players of all levels and age groups begin to wonder when they can get back on the pitch and begin to play the beautiful game once again, and so here’s what a ‘Return to Rugby’ currently looks like at the best little rugby club in the world…..

The RFU has shared a ‘Return to Rugby’ Road Map (image attached to this post) with stages from A to F. F represents a complete return to rugby as we know it with no restrictions. At this moment we are at B, meaning that exercise within a small group of up to 6, whilst maintaining the required 2m social distancing is permitted, with 4 groups on a pitch, no face to face contact and minimum equipment sharing. Other Covid-19 protocols such as excellent hand hygiene, keeping detailed records of who trains and when, and ensuring zero contact between players also apply – there is a significant amount of work to do in ensuring that the facilities and equipment are clean, fit for purpose and meet COVID-19 requirements.

As a club (Senior & Junior sections) there will be NO official training sessions held at HQ until progress is made on the Return to Rugby roadmap and COVID-19 related restrictions have eased further. We understand that players are keen to play rugby again, and encourage all of our players to keep active, build fitness and practise skills within small groups of up to 6 friends/family as current general guidelines permit. Resources with training programmes and activities that can work within the current restrictions are freely available online with the RFU website a good place to start https://www.englandrugby.com/participation/running-your-club/coronavirus/coronavirus-resources your coaching teams will also be able to provide ideas to help you plan your personal sessions.

Over the coming weeks, and as restrictions (hopefully!) continue to ease, and more concrete plans can be put in place we will provide updates. When the time is right, Senior Rugby will return first, with some basic activity for Junior age groups (U15/U14/U13) after that. Mini age groups (U7-U12) are scheduled to return to rugby in early September as per RFU Guidelines.

We hope this provides some level of clarity as we work through the unprecedented challenges we now face and begin the journey of getting back to the simple pleasure of chasing an egg round the pitch.

Thanks

Alex Breading (Director of Rugby)
David Gillespie (Youth Chairman)
